What is up with the controllers?

Using Batocera, RetroPie & every single front end you just sync or plug in a controller, map it & use it. It will auto detect when that controller is active. Why is this not so in Retrobat? What is the point of having a player assignment & being able to select the controllers if it does absolutely nothing in game? Isn't the number one thing supposed to be controllers when gaming? I like using specific controllers for specific consoles & I can't because once you map one controller, that config is saved as default.
