6.3.1 Crash when clicking on "index games" in "r-achievements settings" in main menu.

Hello all,

Hoping someone here can give me a hand with getting my setup running again. 

It is completely dead at the moment. Crashing directly after the splash screen (Topic says what is going on)

Thank you for any guidance you can give me on getting this going again. Also, I am ok with deleting anything related to retroachievements as I had just turned it on tonight.

Thank you all again for any help you can give me to get things going again before I started messing with the retroachievements.

For all finding this in the future. I went into "es_settings.cfg" and turned off  <bool name="CheevosCheckIndexesAtStart" value="true" /> by setting to false.


If this option is not there, at it above the "ClockMode12" entry


Upon restart, everything was functioning properly.

Can you please add some screen that showing your Retrobat installation folder (with path), the content of \emulationstation\.emulationstation\ folder, the specifications of your computer, and the Retrobat version.

@getupor Sorry about that, I solved the first issue in terms of immediate crash with no ability to access the Retrobat GUI. So I added the solution to the other topic but felt like this may deserve a new thread even though related more than likely.

And for sure, try with an official version. Not a build find somewhere on the net.

Can you also please remind what are your computer specs ? Do you have some particuliar thing plugged in USB ? Something that we should know to try to understand ?

Ok. I will give the update to 6.4 a try this evening. Yes, with the official version.

Computer specs:
Retrobat version: 6.3.1 Stable
PC:Windows 10 Home, i710750H, 32GB Ram

In the usb, I have an external hard drive (all of my games are on it). I have a usb hub, the usb hub has a dongle in it for my bluetooth keyboard. That is all that is plugged into the laptop.

I use 2 xbox 360 controllers connected by bluetooth for the games.

I am now on 6.4.

Retrobat is behaving differently now, it is not crashing upon selecting "index games" in the retroachievements settings. It now waits for 5-10 seconds and says something like "Can not access retroachievements list: timeout has been reached"

@getupor @tartifless I am getting a crash on 6.4 when attempting to index when inside of the retroachievements menu. Just checking in to see if you all have any ideas. Is there anyway to clear everything regarding retroachievement in order to start new?

No clue, you are the only one with this...

Maybe you have a corrupted game file and when trying to hash this file it fails

@tartiless Yeah, I have noticed I'm the only one. It makes me sad. I don't even have a clue what I could try. How would I go about doing a new install with my retrobat being fully "perfected". What files/ areas would be "have to" with regards to moving to a new installation of retrobat to ensure I don't have to rebuild everything. Thank you for the help you have given me over time.

I would be ok with starting over but would like to pull all game info, controller info, theme info from the old install. Can you direct me to any guidance on this, or is this a disaster of an idea. :-(

Remove your roms, add them system by system and index after each addition, and try to narrow down at what moment you get a crash.
This will tell you the system that is problematic

So I have tried to index system by system just to see what would happen and systems that should have retroachievements dont seem to have any. I will be honest, I don't know very much about all of this so if I say things that don't sound right, I may be wrong. What I found odd is that when I've selected various system 1 at a time, snes for example, it said no games were found and that just doesn't sound right. I have already noticed an instant crash when indexing ps2 games and on the very first dreamcast game it crashes when indexing retroachievements. So earlier when I said it was crashing immediately, I finally determined it was happening because the dreamcast games were the first ones being indexed for retroachievements and the first dreamcast game caused a crash. I don't understand, why the program doesn't just skip bad ones-- or would this be considered a bug somewhat?

I definitely understand what you are saying about building up 1 system at a time. That makes sense. What is your view of the snes games not finding any. Or is there somewhere in the file system I can look for this info to see if I am wrong and retrobat really did find retroachievements for snes.

Yes, my password does contain the @ symbol. Is this not ok? It let me login with it on the retroachievements website like that. I can change it if thats no good for retrobat. I'm sorry if I missed that as a requirement somewhere. :-/

@tartifless, for snes, I have it working now. I set the menu item to "scrape all", instead of missing in the retroachievements menu. now i will go through scrape 1 system at a time specifically for retroachievements and report back here. I do expect it to crash on the first dreamcast game and at somepoint through the ps2 games. What is your opinion of the crash. Is this something that could be handled by programming on the Retrobat side or is it one of those, "not really our problem" type situations. I'll begin test now.

Apparently, I already had the snes scraped before the crashes started occuring and that was why the system was saying "no games fit this criteria", it was because none of the snes games were missing retroachievement information.

@tartifless Ok so I have this down to the dreamcast system as the issue. You say you believe this is potentially a bad file? Do you think it is that or a bad entry in the gamelist.xml? I don't have many dreamcast games so whatever we come up with should be doable for me over the next week to see whats going on. What do I do, move all of the dreamcast games out of the directory and put them in 10 at a time or something and then run the retroachivements scrape on the dreamcast games? Is there any better way you can think of to narrow it down easier? When it crashes, it does it so fast that I can't even see a potential game name up in the top right corner, makes me think its the first one.

Maybe check these with strange characters in the filename.
Or try and rename your gamelist.xml file to .bak in the roms\dreamcast folder to start fresh.

@tartifless. I will give those a try in the coming week. I am just happy to know I can use retroachievements for 99 percent of my systems now, minus ps2 and dreamcast due to the issues we have been discussing. Thank you so much for your help with this. Hopefully the conversation will help someone in the future. I am very thankful to you. It is nice to know, this isn't really a retrobat issue in a way. It would be nice if the error could be caught somehow to bypass it. When/ if I find exactly what it was, I will report back here. Thank you again @tartifless!!

you can try opening batgui.exe at the root of your install, to see if it detect some strange things on xml.
Or opening the both gamelist.xml with your web browser.
(or also check if you are in utf-8 format for there)
