Crash? On hotkey+save state. Missing scraped data.
Hello!
So I just put the new update on. I overwrote my previous install.
When I booted RB the configs were all reset that was to be expected. I went through configuring as normal.
I disabled auto configuration of controllers opened RA, set the config that I like (controller input, hotkey settings etc) save and exit.
Things working normally in games except when trying to Hotkey+Save State RA immediately closes as if pressing hotkey+start. The state DOES save, however.
I tried turning on RA debug logging to file and there is nothing interesting in the log.
If I open the RA menu and save state it saves as expected and keeps running. Loading state works just fine with the hotkeys.
For some reason in this version now there is a closing when I save state in that way.
On my other (bigger, better) computer I did the same exact install process with the same options and with the same exact controller I don't have this problem.
I'm going to try erasing all content except bios, saves, and roms, and redownloading-reinstalling but I was just wondering if there was any other advice for this.
PS: Additionally some system's scraped data wasn't showing even though it was all still there. NES and Jaguar in particular. Once I realized manually scraping a game brought it back I redid the scrape and instead of "missing selected" did "all games" for that system, it went through a scrape and worked as expected. When I reinstalled for the above issue, the info was missing again. We're talking meta data along with the videos, boxart, etc. The FILES are still in the folders. Just not pulling up in ES even when repopulating game lists. It does this on both of my machines, not just the one with the save state issue.

I disabled auto-config on my old install (previous version) because the hotkey and menu access functions were not mapping to the controller in a way I could understand. So I disabled autoconfig and set them how I want ie hotkey+y save +x load, dpad + and - to change state etc. Also fast forward and rewind etc.
Whenever I launched a new system I would check the settings for that core and not have to do it again. It worked great.
With autoconfig on it seemed every time I made changes and tried to save those particular settings would get rewritten, even if changed in RA launched by itself from ES.
Obviously if there is a better way I am open to it.
I will keep exploring and see if I can find more answer. But there are no other keys bound that I can tell that would cause the game to close, especially since it works as intended on another machine.
Another note.
When I use hotkey+button to try and save state and RA closes, ES comes up, and the controller no longer works in ES. The keyboard does but not the controller. I have to restart the whole thing to get the controller to read again. I have two matching controllers, I tried with both of them same behavior. I tried both of them on PC 2 and it works as intended.

I have done a clean install and have left everything default. I have left autoconfig on. The save state works without closing the emulator now.
The hotkey buttons are unsatisfactory however, which is what caused me to go the route I mentioned before to begin with.
Examples:
-Button 11 defaults to Increment Savestate + AND Quit. So if I use that, it quits the emulator and increments the savestate, well in reverse order, because the save state is incremented on restart.
-Right thumb (cannot remember the number) defaults to Fast-Forward AND Screenshot, so every time I Fast-Forward (Hold) it takes a screenshot.
-Left Stick is both rewind and show FPS so it triggers the FPS each time.
Is there no way for me to customize the hotkey functions and leave everything else alone?

The behavior has returned on a default install, with default autoconfig.
RA closes when using Hotkey + Rightstick (which completes all of the following functions: State -, Fast Forward (Hold), Screenshot in the autoconfig) and when using Hotkey + "Y" which should be the save state option.

I poked around in the autoconfig folder and saw files for my make and model of controller, however the home/hotkey/whatever button was labeled as a different button number than what shows up if I manually bind the controller. Still odd since it -does- work on autoconfig.
So I went to retroarchs online updater and updated the autoconfigs. This brought a couple new configurations into that folder, including one with the button labeled “12” as it appears when I bind it.
This morning I haven’t had the issue with the game closing when using the hotkey however there is still a double-binding in the hotkeys issue.

8bitdo sn30 pro. I connect it in d input mode. Xinput removes the home button which is what I like to use as hotkey. Retroarch has an auto config for it in B mode which is th mode I've been using.

Yes sir, that was the second or so thing I tried. I also removed the controller from windows, rebound it, and have done several hard and soft reboots since then.
Since doing the retroarch config update I dont get the game-close issue anymore. (It did do it once when I tried to save state when in FF but that seems reasonable to me xD)
However everytime I press the hotkey button it does state - still and actually blips Down because all of the characters in games jitter a bit when I press the hotkey even though I checked that that button is now somehow bound to another spot…

Okay I tried this in D-input with select as hotkey and it still doesn't work. The Thumbsticks (L3 and R3) are still set up for forward and reverse and double bound with DPS and Screenshot. The start button is Quit and State + and the "home" button is State -
Save and loading now work and I'm not getting the random closes. Not sure what was causing that.
Since theoretically I wouldn't be using the home key (unavailable in X-Input mode) I'm going to try it in X-input mode and see if that's better.
Update: In Xinput mode the controls work as intended in the user manual. All good for right now.

re: the scrapes I'm just going to dump them all and redownload and redo the gamelists. I'm thinking something got lost or discombobulated from that data in the upgrade.
Save and loading now work and I'm not getting the random closes. Not sure what was causing that.

However on n64 games the auto config puts, generally, +4 as L Trigger (Z trigger) and +4 as a C button. Combining the binds there.
In a session if I manually bind the C buttons to the right stick correctly it appears originally :-4, +4, -3, +3
Correct: -3, +3, -2, +2
I redid the controller setup in ES to see if I missed something there. Is there a switch or something I’m missing?
I can change the settings on each port before play and it works fine but I no longer see the override save options.
I found someone in General Discussion with a similar problem with 8BD controller and they adjusted an es.cfg… Is that the way to a fix?

Hello,
I read that before and no, that does not work. The issue is the controller being mapped at the RA system level with +4 as L2 and +4 as movement on the right stick. It is not a case of the specific map being bad. For example It lists L2 as Z and Joystick 2 movement as C buttons just fine. What it doesn’t show you is that on the system level (from the bigger, main menu) that “+4” is both L2 and Stick movement (Left? I don’t remember)
As I tried it, saving a core remap does not save the system level controller configurations.
This seems to be a duplicate of this issue.

Though the input values are different.
I made a backup of es_input.cfg and replaced the affected values for joystick 2 on the Xbox One Series S (or however it appears) and replaced 4 with 3 and 3 with 2 and it now seems to work as intended.
